Roath Park Cycle Route (Phase 1) – Roath Recreation Ground improvements

We have completed a new segregated path and improved footpaths within Roath Recreation Ground, between Wellfield Road and Alder Road and in the wider area.

This marks the first permanent phase of the Roath Park Cycle Route, which will connect the Roath Park area to the city centre and link with other cycle routes in the future. The improvements through the recreation ground and along Ninian Road connect with the existing Wellfield Road pop-up cycleway.

This phase supports walking and cycling, improving access to local schools, sports and leisure facilities, nearby services, and public transport.

Phase 1 of the route included:

  • Improvements to the junction of Wellfield Road, Marlborough Road, Penylan Road, and Ninian Road by upgrading crossing points, a cycle crossing and changes to the signal phasing.
  • Replacing the priority narrowings on Ty Draw Road with 4 ramped pedestrian crossing points.
  • Improvements to bus stops and a new northbound bus stop on Ninian Road.
  • Changes to the Penylan Community Centre car park to make space for the cycleway, as well as public realm improvements.
  • Improving the zebra crossing at the Pen-y-Wain Road junction with a shared pedestrian and cyclist link to Roath Park Primary School.
  • Upgrading the footpath to a segregated path and upgrade of gym equipment adjacent to the playing field.
  • Changes to the zebra crossing at the Alder Road junction and stopping of through traffic on Alder Road to improve safety at the crossing point, and futureproof the junction.
